It's a text predictor. That's the whole mechanism.

Give it text, it produces the most likely next word. Then it looks at what it now has, including its own last word, and does it again.

The surprising part is that this works!

Nobody actually designed AI to reason or explain.

It turned out that this was the side effect of predicting text — the AI capability arrived as a consequence, not a goal.

Unresolved None of this explains why it works. Only that it does.
